Tom approaches therapy from a relational standpoint and emphasizes authenticity, warmth, and trust while creating a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to experience vulnerability. He has experience working with substance use disorders, mood disorders, grief and loss, and trauma, as well as a specialization in sexual and gender identity issues within the LGBTQIA+ community, of which he is a member. Tom’s counseling approach is integrative, often utilizing collaborative, strengths-based, and client-centered techniques. His work aligns with cognitive-behavioral approaches, narrative therapy, and solution-focused strategies. When treating substance use disorders, Tom incorporates both Twelve Step models and harm reduction approaches. Tom is also trained in Brainspotting.
Tom holds a MA in substance use disorder and mental health counseling and a PhD in counselor education and supervision. He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in Minnesota. Tom serves as a resident faculty member in the Integrated Behavioral Health and Addiction Counseling programs at the University of Minnesota’s College of Continuing and Professional Studies. Alongside his academic and counseling work, Tom also provides clinical supervision to students and pre-licensed practitioners at LynLake Centers for Wellbeing.
