The menopause transition is associated with significant hormonal, metabolic, and neurocognitive changes that can profoundly impact both physical and mental health. Fluctuations and eventual declines in estrogen, progesterone, and androgens contribute to shifts in body composition, energy regulation, sleep patterns, and mood, often presenting with symptoms that overlap with common mental health conditions. As a result, therapists are uniquely positioned to support patients navigating these complex and often misunderstood changes.

This presentation will provide an overview of the underlying physiology of menopause, with a focus on metabolic adaptations and their relationship to symptoms such as sleep disruption, anxiety, cognitive changes, irritability, and weight fluctuations. Participants will gain practical insight into how lifestyle factors—including nutrition, movement, stress management, and sleep—interact with hormonal changes to influence both mental and metabolic health. The role of hormonal and non-hormonal therapies will be discussed at a high level to enhance understanding of available treatment options and to support appropriate referral to medical providers when indicated. Emphasis will be placed on fostering a biologically informed, weight-inclusive approach to care, helping therapists better support patients experiencing menopause-related challenges.
