Training will be in-person and online

Join our DEI training session designed for therapy professionals to explore effective communication styles and strategies for navigating dynamics in therapeutic settings. The session begins with an introduction to the training’s purpose, mission, and an overview of communication styles.

In Part I, participants will take the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT), explore key definitions, and engage in a case study addressing “The Unfinished Business of Slavery.” After a break, Part II will involve group scenarios to apply these concepts in real-world therapy situations, followed by a reflective group discussion.

The session concludes with key takeaways, resources for continued learning, and an assessment to evaluate participants’ understanding, ensuring actionable strategies for creating inclusive therapy environments.

Objectives:

  • Acknowledge how personal experiences, culture, and biases shape their worldview.
  • Understand that others’ cultural backgrounds influence their beliefs and behaviors.
  • Familiarize with cultural differences in communication, mental health expressions, and coping strategies.
  • Recognize cultural differences as variations, not deficits, shaping individual experiences.
  • Learn from clients and adapt therapeutic approaches based on real interactions.
  • Understand that cultural competence is refined through experience with each client.
