Max Avery
They/Them
Not Accepting New Clients
Max is a non-binary, neurodivergent (Autism and ADHD) therapist who specializes in working with neurodivergent clients who are looking to improve their relationship with self and others. They strongly believe there is no "one size fits all" approach to counseling and strive to create an environment that is neurodiversity affirming, non-judgmental, culturally responsive, anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and LGBTQIA+ affirming.
As someone who spent most of their life masking Autism and ADHD, Max understands how inaccessible the world can be. They prioritize creating a space where clients can explore their authentic selves and sensory needs without fear of rejection – and they show up as their authentic self too! They often utilize fidgets, movement, or coloring during sessions to accommodate their sensory needs and encourage their clients to do the same!
Max is passionate about working with teenagers, young adults, and neurodivergent folks! They have experience working with anxiety, relational distress, OCD, depression, Autism, ADHD, life transitions, family of origin concerns, adult children of alcoholics/addicts, substance use, and complex trauma.
They are trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy and consider themselves an attachment-based and emotionally-focused therapist who draws from psychodynamic, ACT, strengths-based, and motivational interviewing approaches in my work with clients. They are also trained in Sand Tray therapy and like to utilize creative interventions in their work with clients (art, music, poetry, etc.). They have worked in a variety of settings including intensive outpatient for substance use and mental health, in-home therapy, a college counseling center, and outpatient mental health services.
Max is licensed by the MN Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC). Max is also a BBHT Board Approved Supervisor for LPC and LPCC candidates.
